Engineers in Singapore Developed 'Smart Skin' Inspired From STAR WARS | Singapore Scientists Proclaimed |

STAR WARS INSPIRED SMART SKIN

Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed an AI device with a sense of touch that can identify objects and textures. The device, officially dubbed ACES (Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin), is composed of 100 different small sensors and is about 1 square centimeter in size.

STORY OF STAR WARS (For those who are not aware of it)

--> There was a scene where Luke Skywalker lost his hand, and towards the end, a Robot Surgeon repaired his hand. Complete with full sensation, so the robot pricks his finger and he goes 'ouch'. From this scene Scientists and Engineers inspired and they turned it into the reality.

The Idea of Smart Skin

Engineers in Singapore have created Smart Skim straight out of Star Wars. The swatch of skin is around 1 Square Centimeters in size. As mentioned, this Smart Skim can identify objects and textures, just as human skin can.

According to Report, it contains around 100 Sensors; and all sensors are playing the major role in its Working Principle.

These sensors transmits minute sensations to an AI Brain which interprets them.

This process works around 1000 Times faster then the Human Central Nervous System. It can determine the shape, hardness and textures of an object in 10 Milliseconds.

Statement of Benjamin Tee (Assistant Professor at National University of Singapore)

--> "Humans need to slide to feel the texture, but in this case the skin, with just a single touch is able to detect textures of different roughness. Ans in some case it is quite difficult to cheat a skin; especially when it is combined with AI Algorithms, that can learn very quickly."

NAME OF DEVICE

This device is officially called Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin or (ACES).

This can differentiate between 20 to 30 Textures.

BUT HOW IS THIS HELPFUL

Their find could allow the prosthetics users, to feel warmth and feel touch in their artificial limbs. The team is working on other smart skin wonders which includes Transparent Water-resistant Skin that can heal itself from large cuts.
